An introduction to silicon carbide


Emery, also called Silicon carbide, is made by means of high temperature smelting in the resistance furnace using raw material such as silica sand, petroleum coke (or coke ) and sawdust (salt is required for producing green silicon carbide). The silicon carbide also has rare mineral in natural named moissanite. Also known as moisstanite, the silicon carbide is widely used in the modern non-oxide hi-tech fireproof material including C, N, and B. It is the most economical material which is also called emery or fire sand. In China, the silicon carbide used in industrial production encompasses black and green silicon carbide, of which both are hexagonal crystal with proportion 3.20-3.25 and micro-hardness 2840~3320kg/mm2.


Scope of Application 

  

The silicon carbide is mainly applied in the four realms: functional ceramics, advanced fireproof material, grinding material and metallurgy material. The silicon carbide is able to supply in block, which cannot be termed high-tech product. The scale economy for the application of nanometer-sized silicon carbide powder is impossible to take shape within a short time. 


     ⑴Serving as grinding material, the silicon carbide can be used to produce abrasive tool, such as grinding wheel, oil stone, grinding head and abrasive segment. 
     ⑵It can be used as deoxidizer and heat-resisting material. 

     ⑶It is in the form of high-purity single crystal that can be used to produce semiconductor and silicon carbide fiber.


Main application: It can be used as linear cutting for single crystal silicon, polycrystalline silicon, gallium arsenide and quartz crystal. 


Meanwhile, the silicon carbide can be applied to semiconductor , lightening rod, circuit component, temperature use, UV-light detector, structural material, astronomy, disc brake, clutch, diesel particle filter, fire-wire pyrometer, ceramic film, cutting tool, heating component, nuclear fuel, jewelry, steel, protective appliance and support. 


Abrasive material/abrasive tool   

  

It is mainly used to produce grinding wheel, abrasive paper, abrasive belt, abrasive, grinding, grinding head, grinding paste and mono-crystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon of photovoltaic products and grinding and polishing for piezoelectric crystal in electronic industry. 


Chemical


The material can be used as the steelmaking deoxidizer and cast iron modifier as well as the raw material for manufacture of silicon tetrachloride. It serves as the main raw material in silicone industry. Silicon carbide deoxidizer is a new kind of compound deoxidizer, which has replaced the traditional solid silicon powder for de-oxidation. The physical and chemical performance is more stable and has good deoxidization effect compared with the original process, which shortens deoxidization time, saves energy, improves the efficiency of steel, improves steel quality, reduces raw material consumption, lessens environmental pollution, improves working conditions and has important value in improving the comprehensive economic benefits of the electric furnace. 


Three resistant Material 


The silicon carbide features corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, strength, good thermal conductivity and impact resistance, which not only can be applied to all kinds of smelting furnace lining, high temperature furnaces component, silicon carbide plate, lining board, supports, sagger and silicon carbide crucible but also it can be used as high-temperature indirect heating material in non-ferrous metal smelting industry, such as vertical distillation furnace, furnace distillation tray, aluminium electrolyzer, copper melting furnace lining, arc plate used for zinc powder furnace and the thermocouple protection tube. Besides, it can be used to produce wear-resisting, corrosion resistant, high temperature resistant and other advanced silicon carbide ceramic materials. Plus, it can also be used to make the rocket nozzle, gas turbine blades. Plus, silicon carbide is one of the ideal materials used in expressway, aviation airport runway and solar water heater.


Non-ferrous metal 


The silicon carbide is acterized by corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, strength, good thermal conductivity and impact resistance, which can be used as high-temperature indirect heating material such as vertical distillation furnace, furnace distillation tray, aluminium electrolyzer, copper melting furnace lining, arc plate used for zinc powder furnace and the thermocouple protection tube.


Steel 


With features such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, wear and impact resistance and good thermal conductivity, the silicon carbide can be used as large blast furnace lining to increase service life. 


Metallurgy mineral processing


The hardness of silicon carbide is second only to diamond. It has strong wear resistant performance, which can serve as the ideal material for wear-resisting pipe, blade wheel, pump room, hydrocyclone and ore bucket lining. 


Building material and vitrified abrasive


Producing sheet kiln furniture with its features such as coefficient of thermal conductivity and thermal radiation and high strength not only can reduce the capacity of kiln furniture, but also can improve the loading capacity of the kiln and the product quality, shorten production cycle. It is the ideal indirect materials of ceramic glaze baking sintering. 


Energy conservation

 

With good thermal conductivity and thermal stability, it can serve as heat exchanger which can reduce fuel consumption by 20% and save fuel by 35% and in return improve productivity by 20-30%, especially the disge pipeline mill plant, the wear-resisting degree is 6-7 times than ordinary material. 

Abrasive grain and composition abides by B/T2477—83. The determination method for abrasive grain composition is based on GB/T2481—83.


Jewelry 


Synthetic Moissanite, also known as Synthetic Moissanite (chemicals (SiC), has dispersion (0.104) that is greater than diamonds (0.044), index of refraction is 2.65-2.69 diamonds (2.42). It has the same adamantine luster as the diamond. The color "fire" is stronger, which appears more to be diamonds than any other imitations. This is produced by the North Carolina C3 company which has the world\'s patent and now promotes this application in the world.


De-rust by sandblast:


The product is made of brown fused alumina micro powder through high pressure extrusion and high temperature sintering molding. It is moderate hardness and clean and not easy to damage, which can be used repeatedly and has favorable sand blasting. 


1. Surface brush processing for steel, steel pipe, steel structure as well as sandblasting de-rusting treatment before spraying.
2. Used for cleaning of various kinds of mold.
3. It can eliminate all kinds of tensile stress and increase the fatigue life.
4. It can remove burr before applying tin to semiconductor devices and sealnt pipe.

5. Used for shot peening finishing processing for medical equipment, textile machinery and all kinds of hardware products.  

6. Used to clean and remove burrs residue for all kinds of metal and non-ferrous metal precision casting.


Product acteristics of aluminum shot blasting (corundum ball) :

 

1. It has both good hardness and softness that is made of high quality material. The product has certain mechanical strength, with AL2O3 content greater than or equal to 68﹪, hardness up to 6-7 Morse and enough flexibility, which can be used repeatedly and invulnerability to breakage. Its service life is three times longer than ordinary emery.

2. Good uniformity-the circle rate is greater or equal to 80 percent. The particle size is balanced and the brightness coefficient after spraying is balanced, which is not easy to leave watermark.
